We would suggest that anyone who does acquire any data from an unauthorised source to NOT upload it to the Collectorz.com database though the use of KollectiON.

I thought KollectiON is for IMDb's Fans sign-lol
Is getting those public data for private use (by using script or copy/paste) illegal? confused-83

damn. i guess it's the end of an era, this makes Movie Collector pretty much useless to me now that we can't get community support for the scripts anymore as I really dislike the Collectorz DB. I think that was a big mistake by starting their own DB as this would have just angered other sources that would then look at them as competition possibly stealing their work.

Time to start looking at some of those other products out there and see if they are still doing IMDB support. It was fun whilst it lasted. :|

Unfortunately I'm not good enough with scripting to keep correcting errors as they come up, and I'm currently having issues with the IMDB script.

A big thank you to Dave C and yourself Mark for putting all the effort in that you did over the years. sign-GreatJob

I agree with you. It is the end of an era. If we couldn't solve the IMDb scripting issue in ANY way I will feel urged to seek my hell somewhere else. Of course without Collectorz!

If someone of you guys know a script which write the IMDB data into ANY structured data format I will appreciate telling us, the simple users disappointed of the Collectorz approach.

DaveC, Mark you have been great! Thanks a lot! :)

Yep, I'm disappointed as well, as it looks like the latest changes to IMDB have rendered the last script useless. Oh well, it was great as long as it lasted.

I'm still in the dark about what the problem is, I'm afraid. I understand that Collectorz has decided not to use Amazon any more (and since Amazon own ImDB they are off limits as well), but I thought this was about mobile applications. I don't use mobile applications and can't see myself ever doing so.

I think that Mark and DaveC have done a great job here and I'm very grateful to them. I hope things go well for them.

But I am sorry that this programme no longer really has the functionality I need. The Movie Collector database is inadequate if you collect early cinema and foreign films, which is where my interest lies.

I'll keep checking the site to see if things change and hope things go well for you guys.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Now this is just my opinion formed from posts over at Collectorz Forum and observations of various legal processes in the past. I'm suspecting that Collectorz opened a big can of worms with their own DB. Sources like Amazon, IMDB, etc all don't really mind people data mining for their own PERSONAL use, however when a company starts making money of their data, well that's a different story. Since Collectorz couldn't 100% say that the data they have in their own DB and submitted by users is NOT taken from one of those sources and since they are providing a way to mine the data inside their various Collectorz applications, they had to drop them. They tried to keep Amazon initially, but they put their foot down with the mobile app, which I'm suspecting also brought them some unwanted attention to the desktop app as well. If you look through the forums @ Collectorz, there is an interesting post from Mark hinting at the fact that Collectorz aren't too fond of Kollection's ability to keep using scripts, as well as a couple of posts from Collectorz admins saying stuff like "I'm not too sure how long we'll allow Kollection to be advertised and posting on the Collectorz forums if they keep using scripts".

I suspect we are all going to be kept in the dark about stuff like this since Alwin @ Collectorz isn't always the most forth coming with providing 100% of the facts.

Like I said, this is JMHO from what I could piece together and little bit of logic.

Just about sums it up :)

IMDb's take on it is HERE, and the important bit is:
Quote:
Under certain limited conditions, some sets of IMDb data may be used for projects that are both personal and non-commercial. (Please note that any use of IMDb content in conjunction with a website, wireless application or distributed piece of software does not qualify as "personal use".)
And HERE, again, the important bit is:
Quote:
You may not use data mining, robots, screen scraping, or similar online data gathering and extraction tools on our website.

I also exchanged a few emails with Alwin and he is not happy with providing a IMDb/Amazon route into a Collectorz Database which ultimately would end up in an iPhone.

Mark
