Post HOW TO: Search IMDb using IMDb number
I have been using Collectorz 5.6 for some time and a few days ago started working with KollectiON. Eternally grateful to you guys for the work you have put in. It is already a great utility and promises more.

Sadly, unless I am being v dim, it dosen't seem to be the get-around I have been looking for to solve a perennial IMDB search frustration. Let me try to explain and maybe I can inspire you to come up with a solution.

Quite frequently what are effectively TV feature movies fall under an umbrella TV 'series' in IMDB. I am speaking here of series which are in no way "episodic" but rather a series of cast-linked or writer-linked one off dramas. 'Inspector Morse' or 'Ruth Rendell Mysteries' or 'The Complete Works of Shakespeare' would be examples of such series. By way of example, I have an off-air DVD recording of Ruth Rendell's 'The Lake of Darkness'. It is in the 90-120 min running time range, fits nicely on one DVD, lives on my shelf and I would like to get its details into the database! A search for this title on IMDB yields no immediate results because it is in fact considered to be Episode 8 of Season 11 of a series called 'Ruth Rendell Mysteries' and its page has to be accessed through their 'Search for Episodes by title' feature or searching for the series and drilling down through the season and episode lists. This works and eventually we reach a unique IMDB page http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0199699/ which contains all the information I would like to download into collectorz. Now it seems to me (and I know nothing) that trying to produce scripts to search, find and download this information would be tricky but once we get to the page it is (I think) identical to any other unique ttxxxxxxx title page an therefore the 'reading the fields' script would be as straightforward as reading any other movie title page. The problem I guess would be the labyrinthine search .... but could a script not be devised that searched for the unique IMDB number rather than the Title, sub title or Series/Episode Number. In other words we find the IMDB page 'manually' and then use a KollectiON script to access this page by searching on the IMDB the page index number rather than the Title.

I imagine that you are going to reply that KollectiON already does this and that I am a very foolish person, if so perhaps you could post instructions and if not might you set your considerable talents to making it do that. I'm sure there would be a few more than me who would find it a useful facility.

Many thanks.

mr2legs, welcome to the forum sign-Welcome

I have looked at searching with an imdb number and it should be possible without changing any code to KollectiON. I will talk to DaveC about how we can resolve this and post a solution back here.

BTW. When you search in IMDb you can use the IMDb number preceeded by tt. For Example use the following to search with:-
tt0199699
This will return the page that you require.

I tried this in KollectiON with the standard IMDb scripts and you do not get any results returned. To resolve it requires a set of scripts and config. It should not be too much work.

Too late, I copied and tweaked the IMDb scripts. If you re-run KollectiON you will get the latest scripts which now includes "IMDb No" for searching with an IMDb Number as the Title. Note, when you do the search in KollectiON by Title only include the numerical part of the IMDb number; the tt part should not be used. eg. 0199699

Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! happy-65

It works!
I can't tell you how much help this is going to be to me and hopefully many more users.

Thank you, Mark.

Were my adolescent son remotely interested (in anything) I feel sure you would be included in his 'phrase de jour' - 'You Rock!' In this particular case I think I would have to concur. Keep 'rocking' and thanks again.
